Officials warn Austin hospital in jeopardy

State Rep. La Shawn Ford, Congressman Danny K. Davis and others warned Tuesday that the coronavirus pandemic could lead to Loretto Hospital closing. They pleaded for more funding for the hospital, the community’s largest private employer.

West Side residents needing help feeding their families can visit weekly food banks operated by St. Martin de Porres Church, Hope Community Church and Fraternite Notre Dame. The Police Department’s 15th District has also been distributing food.

Chicagoans seek early release for loved ones in Illinois prisons

The coronavirus pandemic has family members frantic to get their loved ones released from Illinois prisons. State officials announced on Monday that an inmate from Stateville Correctional Center has died, and 12 other prisoners have been hospitalized and are being treated for the coronavirus.

Davis wins Democratic primary once again

WIith 90% of the precincts reporting, Congressman Danny K. Davis easily won re-election. He garnered more than 60% of the vote, while challenger Kina Collins came in second with about 14% of the vote. Anthony Clark finished third, getting nearly 13%, and Kristine Schanbacher was fourth with almost 12%.

Time running out for West Side voters to cast ballots in Tuesday’s primary

    The Westside Cultural Alliance continues its "See, Feel and Heal" nature series Saturday at Garfield Park Nature Area, 100 N. Central Park with a workshop on making memory boxes. The workshop sessions focus on art and nature as vehicles of healing through art therapy, which provides wholistic healing for the body, mind and spirit.

  • Illinois residents can apply for help with paying gas, electric bills

    Applications are now open for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for qualified residential customers who are over the age of 60, have a disability or have children under the age of 6 to receive financial assistance to pay their energy bills. LIHEAP is a federally funded bill payment assistance program that helps low- and fixed-income families pay their utility during the winter heating season.

  • West Siders turn out for chili cook off in Austin’s Soul City

    Over a dozen local chefs competed in the second annual "It’s Getting Chili in Soul City" event on Saturday. A team of five who make up the Austin African American Business Networking Association board – Malcolm Crawford, Shirley Fields, Sharmine Rickett, Ronald Smith and Marshawn Felton – created the chili contest last year.
