The ballot will be finalized by Jan. 13, once all challenges have been decided by the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.
Chicago election officials will begin holding hearings on Dec. 12 to determine which West Side aldermanic candidates will remain on the ballot in the Feb. 28th election. Objections have been filed to two candidates challenging Ald. Chris Taliaferro. All three challengers to Ald. Jason Ervin also face hearings later this month.
Austin lawmaker La Shawn Ford said the new state budget includes $12 million to fund Illinois’ witness protection program. The Leaders Network has been pushing for the funding for years.
The City Bureau’s Public Newsroom hosted a workshop last week at Austin Community Academy High School to educate and empower West Side residents to engage with their alderman and hold them accountable. The Austin Weekly News and Austin Coming Together also sponsored the workshop.
The City Bureau, Austin Weekly News and Austin Coming Together will be holding a workshop Aug. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Austin Community Academy High School, 231 N. Pine Ave. Two questions will be considered: What has your alderman been up to since the spring 2019 election, and how can residents hold the Chicago City Council accountable?
The first-term alderman won another four years on the Chicago City Council, beating Dwayne Truss and Zerlina A. Smith. Incumbents Emma Mitts (37th) and Jason Ervin (28th) also easily won re-election.
Voters in the 29th Ward have three aldermanic candidates to choose from: Ald. Chris Taliaferro, Dwayne Truss and Zerlina A. Smith. There are 14 mayoral candidates, including two who have strong West Side ties: Austin Chamber of Commerce Amara Enyia and state Rep. La Shawn Ford.
Three weeks before the Feb. 26th election, the three aldermanic candidates answered questions about a number of issues at an event organized by Austin Coming Together and South Austin Neighborhood Association.
Residents in the 29th Ward will have three candidates to choose from when early voting begins this week. First-term Ald. Chris Taliaferro is being challenged by Dwayne Truss and Zerlina A. Smith. A fourth candidate was knocked off the Feb. 26th ballot.
The petitions of two of the three incumbent alderman – 28th Ward Ald. Jason Ervin and 37th Ward Ald. Emma Mitts – have not been challenged. But each of the challengers in both of those wards are having to defend the signatures they collected to secure a spot on the Feb. 26th ballot.
