The Loretto Hospital has become the first safety-net hospital in Illinois to conduct clinical trials, making it a pioneer for Illinois hospitals that serve patients regardless of insurance status.
Michele Clark Principal Charles Anderson Jr. said many students who attend elementary school in Austin leave the community for high schools that offer an IB program, especially if they were already enrolled in the program. The hope is that having a high school program in Austin would keep some of those students in Austin.
“It really is a tremendous history, and I think it would be hard for people a 150 years ago to imagine how the church has grown over these 15 decades,” Rev. Colleen Vahey said. The public is invited to the special service being held Sunday at the church.
Davis won reelection with 88 percent of the vote, while Craig Cameron secured 12 percent. The 77-year-old congressman has represented the 7th Congressional District for two decades.
“There’s no versus them in this,” Deputy Chief Kevin Johnson said at a recent community forum. “We need your ideas, and we need your help. Whatever we can do to solve our problems, that’s what we need to do. We can’t point fingers anymore, we need to put on paper what we can do to make our community safer.”
Tamara Tucker, who was engaged to the office when he was shot to death in late 2011, organizes the event each year. “I do it because it’s a passion, and I wanted it to be in remembrance of the officer who patrolled the Austin area who loved his job.”
“This was a growth year for us,” said Malcolm Crawford, race organizer and executive director of the Austin African American Business Networking Association. “We’re looking for bigger and better next year. We got a lot of good experience this year, so we are looking forward to next year.”
For the first time in the citywide festival’s eight-year history, 11 locations in Austin will be featured.
The West Side Community Triage and Wellness Center, which opened in August, provides resources for those who have experienced trauma or mental health issues. The center also aims to correct misconceptions about methods of treatment like counseling or medications.
Another meeting will be held Sept. 19 at BUILD’s offices. Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin has been leading efforts to gauge support for such a court in Austin.
