A state committee will hold a final hearing Monday night, where the Illinois African Americans for Equitable Redistricting will push for a election map and the creation of a standing committee of the Chicago Board of Education.
Austin residents joined the school community in asking to be involved in the development of a lot next to the high school, which was recently purchased by CPS. An online survey will help gather input.
About 50 people gathered at La Follette Park Friday before marching to Chicago Board of Education member Dwayne Truss’ residence. They were protesting the contract between Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Police Department, and calling on Truss to vote against the contract at CPS’ Aug. 26th meeting.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Truss’ appointment along with the rest of the seven-member board on Monday at a press conference. The new board will be sworn in on June 26.
The Chicago Board of Education is expected in early December to take action to shutter Plato Learning Academy, a K-8 contract school that has two campuses in Austin, for failing to meet the district’s academic standards. Parents, students and community members plan to speak at the Dec. 6th board meeting in hopes of saving the school.
It’s one of 13 events CPS is holding before classes begin next week. The Aug. 30th event takes place at Prosser from 2 to 5 p.m.
Later this year, Austin Polytechnical Academy and Austin Entrepreneurship and Business Academy will close, while VOISE Academy will remain open.
The Chicago Board of Education is set to approve the plan to phase out Austin Polytechnical Academy and Austin Business and Entrepreneurship Academy but keep VOISE Academy.
The Chicago Westside branch of the NAACP is hosting the event Nov. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
