Nelson Mandela Community Center coming to Austin this fall

The center will be housed in a building, located at Madison Street and Cicero Avenue, that lifelong West Side residents Shrone Conaway and brothers Marnell and Malcolm Brown purchased. The center will provide resources on violence prevention, HIV/AIDS testing, housing, job coaching and support for people experiencing substance use disorders.

New Austin community hub celebrated

BUILD Chicago’s new 10,000-square-foot campus will be officially open to the public in May, with youth programs starting this month. The hub is located at BUILD’s Austin site at 5100 W. Harrison St.

Finalists selected to install art installation in Soul City Corridor

Two gateway structures will be installed at the entrances of the Soul City Corridor along Chicago Avenue, one at Austin Boulevard and the other at Cicero Avenue. The three artists finalists in the competition – Wesley Clark, Sonja Henderson and Bernard Williams – were introduced at an online community forum held earlier this month.

Aspire Center construction to start this spring

The Aspire Center for Workforce Innovation will open next year and provide free services in career development. The center will be on the former site of Emmet School, 5500 W. Madison St., which former Mayor Rahm Emanuel closed in 2013.
