Reparations discussed at Austin church

Carl McCargo led a discussion earlier this month on reparations at the Third Unitarian Church of Chicago. He talked about the tragic legacy chattel slavery left behind, but he’s hopeful the U.S. can heal the inter-generational trauma caused by centuries of an oppressive system.

Chicago architecture tour goes virtual

Open House Chicago’s tour will feature five sites in Austin from Oct. 16 to 25, down from nine in fall 2019. The sites are: Kehrein Center for the Arts, Austin Town Hall Cultural Center, Third Unitarian Church, the Austin State Bank building and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. Because of COVID-19, some changes have been made. Instead of the usual two-day weekend, Open House is extending to 10 days.

Church launches community pop-up pantry Saturday

Third Unitarian Church, 301 N. Mayfield Ave., is launching an outdoor pop-up pantry on Saturdays from 10 a.m. till noon, starting this Saturday, July 11. The pantry will distribute non-perishables, such as canned goods and possibly fresh produce. There will also be household items available, including cleaning supplies, toilet paper, diapers, hand sanitizer and face masks.

Austin students awarded scholarships from Third Unitarian Church

Each graduating senior will receive a $1,000 scholarship. This is the 46th year the Austin church has awarded scholarships to college-bound students from the West Side.

21 Austin students receive college scholarships from Third Unitarian Church

This is the 45th year the Austin church has awarded scholarships. Since the program began in 1974, more than 500 students have received the awards. This year, students received $1,000 each.

Third Unitarian celebrates 150 years of inclusion, activism

CPS official to speak Sunday at Third Unitarian Church
