The screenings are available through the end of March for individuals who are uninsured or underinsured. The screenings will look for a number of conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis and dry eye.

At last week’s 29th Ward meeting, Ald. Chris Taliaferro said it was time to move past The Loretto Hospital’s vaccine scandal and not let it overshadow the other work the hospital is doing. He also commented on proposals to reform the Chicago Police Department.
To qualify for a free mammogram, patients must be 40 or older with no issues or symptoms and not have had a mammogram within the last year. To qualify for a pap smear, patients must be over 21 and not have had a pap smear in the past three years. Eligible individuals must live in one of the these ZIP codes: 60651, 60644, 60707, 60639 or 60635.
The new law, signed Friday by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, provides $150 million in funding for hospitals like Loretto. Sitting nearby were several elected officials, including Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford and state Rep. Camille Lilly. Both represent Austin residents in the Illinois General Assembly.
Starting Friday, Austin residents 18 can sign up to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at either of two new vaccination centers in Austin.

SEIU Illinois and The Loretto Hospital reached a tentative contract agreement last week. The new contract includes wage increases, regular raises for staff and staffing protections. Workers will vote on the agreement on Wednesday. On Monday, they’ll will gather outside the hospital as part of the “Strike for Black Lives National Day of Action” to their solidarity for workers across the country “calling for the resources, wages and workplace protections needed to protect Black lives on the job and in our communities.”
