Austin school unveils new murals

Lewis School of Excellence and the Revive Center unveiled new murals Friday at two locations on the West Side. The mural series at Lewis is titled “We Believe” and was designed by students. The Revive Center mural, painted by artist John Vergara, depicts Cesar Chavez, Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King Jr.

After School Matters

Applications open for After School Matters spring programs

Slots are available for approximately 8,000 young people to participate in the after-school program that begins the week of March 8. The programs will be offered remotely, as they have been since last summer. Teens will earn a stipend between $90 and $250 depending on the length and level of expertise required for the program.

Plato avoids closure with contract renewal with CPS

The Chicago Board of Education voted this week to renew Plato Learning Academy’s contract for two years, giving the Austin school more time to improve its rating. Specific conditions for the contract renewal will be finalized with Plato’s operator early next year, officials say.

Ford last week in his push to open a pilot overdose prevention site in Chicago, possibly on the West Side. Standing at the corner of West Van Buren Street and South Pulaski Road, one of many West Side areas with high overdose rates, Ford called for the public and lawmakers to support a bill that would allow the creation of overdose prevention sites in Chicago.
