Classes start Aug. 28 for kindergarten through eighth grade at the Austin school celebrating 127 academic years.
Last month’s two-week program at the University of Illinois at Chicago gave 150 students citywide the opportunity to practice skills, watch performances and develop new techniques.
The organization that’s served at-risk Chicago youth for four decades is now providing services at 5100 W. Harrison St.
The free event featured professionals, as well as student performers from the Chicago Park District day camp program.
The 6 p.m. July 30 free event will feature performers from the Chicago West Community Music Center’s cultural exchange program.
The students will be spending nearly a year in the Bethel New Life program to help them realize and pursue their academic dreams, ending with a trip to Princeton University spring 2013.
The showcase at Oscar DePriest Elementary School will be available for viewing from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. with pieces from the summer youth art program, which allowed students to tell personal stories through their work.
Sen. Kimberly Lightford (4th) says money is available, but school funding continues to be cut.
