State Democratic lawmakers say they’ll fight Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed cuts and remain hopeful a new spending plan will be approved this week.
Students from Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School and Milton R. Brunson Math and Science School traveled to Springfield to participate in the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ event.
A group of more than 40 joined the state representative Downtown on Tuesday when he pleaded not guilty to 17 counts of bank fraud and other related charges.
Political scientists and a fellow state lawmaker say the representative will be able to continue his work in the Illinois House despite his indictment.
Despite protests by Chicagoans who travelled to Springfield to make their voices heard, the measure was approved by the Illinois House Executive Committee. The House and Senate will still have to vote before it can be signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn.
Residents are encouraged to contact state representatives in support of the bill before March 8.
At a town hall meeting Feb. 25, he and activists urged residents to spread the word about a bill that could help ex-offenders get jobs, housing and grants for college.
