Strategic plan to improve the community discussed tonight

Austin Coming Together will hold a town hall meeting Aug. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Austin Town Hall.
The next meeting will be held Nov. 6 at Columbus Park.
Residents asked to attend two more meetings this fall to develop plan for the future.
The Rebuild Chicago initiative aims to crack down on crime associated with empty structures and help raise values by turning them into rental properties. West Siders can attend an Oct. 25 meeting to learn more.
Residents and advocates met Monday to discuss why closing the Austin center is harmful to the community. An 11 a.m. protest is planned at the Y’s Downtown headquarters Thursday.
Working with Eco-Vidal Design and others, the Austin community coalition is looking for input on the project they hope will include the old Brach’s Candy factory.
While some express support for the city’s plan, others remain concerned the West Side was not singled out for specific projects.
The Center for Neighborhood Technology will use data collected to develop plans to alleviate backyard and basement flooding events such as the summer 2010 storms that soaked the West Side.
The March 15 event at Austin Town Hall Park brought residents together to dicuss what improvements in arts and culture are needed in their communities.
Last weekend’s event shines light on this important issue. This weekend, there will be more community events, including Ald. Emma Mitt’s back-to-school gospel fest and the William V. Banks and Lillian Gill Grand Lodge community parade and cookout.
