Nelson Mandela Community Center coming to Austin this fall

The center will be housed in a building, located at Madison Street and Cicero Avenue, that lifelong West Side residents Shrone Conaway and brothers Marnell and Malcolm Brown purchased. The center will provide resources on violence prevention, HIV/AIDS testing, housing, job coaching and support for people experiencing substance use disorders.

Celebrate Nelson Mandela Friday in Austin

Celebrate the birthday of peacemaker Nelson Mandela from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 16 at 5300 W. Chicago Ave. Two community leaders – Chicago Police Sgt. Jermaine Harris and state Sen. Kim Lightford – will be honored. Friday’s celebration is sponsored by state Rep. La Shawn Ford, the Westside Health Authority and SSA 72.

Celebrate Nelson Mandela today

The public is invited to celebrate the Nobel Peace Prize winner and first president of post-apartheid South Africa Thursday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at 5051 W. Chicago Ave. Mandela died in 2013.

West Siders are invited to a birthday celebration and tribute 10:30 a.m. July 18 to the South African leader. The event, which will be held at 4800 W. Chicago Ave., is sponsored by state Rep.
