Faith leaders will march to the new Leaders Network Credit Union at 5600 W. Madison St. where they will open an account with $250,000.
Young men participating in the MAAFA Redemption Project, a faith-based residential institute in West Garfield Park, traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in Saturday’s voting rights march and rally. West Side ministers also attended the event, which marked the 58th anniversary of the historic March on Washington.
The march will kick off at 10 a.m. in the 4900 block of West Chicago Avenue. Ald. Emma Mitts, Congressman Danny Davis and Chicago Police Supt. David Brown will lead the march.
Ira Acree, pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church, and Jose Abonce of Austin Coming Together both traveled to D.C. last week to take part in the “Commitment March: Get Your Knee Off Our Necks.”
Sunday’s peaceful demonstration was one of many held throughout Chicago since police in Minneapolis killed George Floyd.
At least 1,500 people participated in a peaceful protest Thursday evening from Oak Park to Austin. It was organized by state Rep. La Shawn K. Ford.
All are invited to gather at 1 p.m. June 4 at the former Emmet School, at the corner of Madison and Central, to pray and organize. Each of us is needed to restore justice and peace; rebuild West Side businesses; reduce violence and COVID-19; and strengthen relationships. Thursday’s event is sponsored by the Westside Health Authority, state Rep. La Shawn Ford, Alds. Chris Taliaferro and Emma Mitts, and faith-based leaders.
Meet at the corner of Madison and Keeler at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 3 for the march kick-off. A job and resource fair will be held after the march.
Buses will leave Greater St. John Church, 1256 N. Waller, at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 2. Groups from across the city – including Violence Interrupters, the Coalition for a New Chicago, and The Leaders Network – will be meeting at 4 p.m. at Belmont and Lake Shore Drive.
