Austin teen and future mathematician graduates top of his class

James Nnabuihe graduated as valedictorian last month from Austin College & Career Academy. He will be the third sibling to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he plans to study math.

Free meals available again at many West Side schools

CPS will resume meal distribution Tuesday at more than 300 school sites – including about a dozen in Austin – after a temporary one-day suspension. No grab-and-go meal sites were open on Monday due to transportation and safety challenges that were anticipate for staff that hand out the meals. CTA buses and trains were shut down Sunday night and didn’t resume operating until Monday because of weekend looting across the city that followed peaceful protests over the police killing in Minnesota of George Floyd.

Most Austin schools expect increase in 20-21 budget

All but four Chicago Public Schools in Austin could see an increase in their budgets for the 20-21 school year. The Chicago Board of Education still needs to approved the school district’s $2.8 billion budget; that’s expected to happen sometime this summer.

CPS continues free meal distribution over spring break

Five of the district’s Network 3 schools – including Brunson Elementary – will distribute food the week of April 6. Starting April 13, when e-learning resumes, free meals will be handed out at nearly 300 schools across the district, including 14 in Austin.

Little change in Austin schools’ enrollments, ratings

Half of Austin’s public schools are categorized as underutilized in a recently released report. Another report gave two of Austin’s 13 Austin elementary and high schools a higher rating than the year before, while four schools saw a drop in their ratings.

CPS to hold public meetings on school funding

West Side parents, students relieved school is resuming

Austin families uttered a sign of relief Thursday with the news that the Chicago Teachers Union had suspended its 11 day-strike and that classes for about 300,000 Chicago Public Schools students will resume Friday. Earlier this week, union delegates voted 364 to 242 to approve the 41-page, five-year agreement.

Five Austin elementary schools now offering full-day pre-K programs

The schools – Oscar DePriest Elementary, Edward K. Duke Ellington Elementary, Howe School of Excellence, Lewis School of Excellence and Sayre Language Academy – now offer a total of 140 full-day seats. In total, all of Austin’s elementary schools have 660 full-day seats and 120 half-day seats available to West Side children.
