Take part in the monthly community hub meeting of Austin Coming Together on Tuesday, Jan. 25 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. The virtual meeting will be held on Facebook Live.
The three businesses – POTLUC, Soul City Chicago and Third City Cafe – are receiving about $3 million out of $14.4 million being funded through the Chicago Recovery Plan. More than 180 proposals were submitted during the latest round of funding. The next deadline to apply for a grant is Jan. 31.
The reception and panel discussion was to be held at the Austin library branch but had to be postponed because the library is closed due to the number of staff who’ve tested positive for COVID. The exhibit, which opened in December at the library, highlights the work of 19 Austin and Oak Park residents.
The Austin project is one of 21 proposals officials are considering as part of the $10 million Chicago Works Community Challenge. The Columbus Park project – proposed by Samantha Jordan – is vying with two others in the west region for up to $1.5 million in funding. A decision is expected by the end of this year.
The Kehrein Center for the Arts hosted a symposium last weekend on the importance of building Black wealth in Austin. Community leaders discussed the current housing situation and what it will take for change.
Religious leaders will be going door to door Thursday in the 1200 block of North Mason Avenue, where there was a deadly shootout last week in the middle of the day. The goal is to show love and give support to the community.
About 50 people remembered the teen on the eve of what would have been his 22nd birthday. This year, the teen’s mother, Sharita Galloway, honored his memory by dedicating a towering tree next to the swimming pool at Rehm Pool in Oak Park.

Over $22,000 was raised for Austin eateries and the nonprofit New Moms at last month’s event. More than 200 tickets were sold for the event that was organized by The Takeout 25 initiative, which was started during the pandemic to help local restaurants in Oak Park and has spread to Chicago’s West Side.
