Westside group to deliver valentines to local residents

The Westside Health Authority’s community-based movement, the Good Neighbor campaign, will be hand delivering homemade cards on Valentine’s Day.
The monthly event will be held at 5051 W. Chicago Ave. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14; from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15; and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16.
Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford, who represents Austin in the Illinois Senate, will host the social equity workshop from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 11 at Columbus Park Refectory.
Torriente Toliver tips with about 35 people who gathered Friday night at the Westside Health Authority to learn how to protect themselves from kidnapping and assault. Toliver, a former teacher, is the owner of Mind Body Defense. State Rep. La Shawn Ford organized the free session.
Fernando Jones will perform the show at 1 p.m. Feb. 8 in the community room of the 25th District Police Station at 5555 W. Grand Ave. Space is limited so organizers ask that you RSVP to the event.
Stop by Friendship Baptist Church, 5200 W. Jackson Blvd., from 1 to 4 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 8. All are invited to the monthly community event.
The sixth annual event will feature a quilt show, craft fair, food, music, poetry readings and more. It will run from 2 to 8 p.m. at 6200 W. Bloomingdale Ave.
Get free tips on how to prevent assaults and which self-defense techniques to use. The event – hosted by state Rep. La Shawn Ford and feature Westside Health Authority instructor Tottiente Tolliver. It will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at 5437 W. Division St.
Though incumbent Rep. Danny K. Davis was absent, the other three candidates – high school teacher Anthony V. Clark, healthcare advocate Kina Collins and attorney Kristine Schanbacher – made the case for voters to support them in the March 17 Democratic primary.
