Members of The Leaders Network say changes to Illinois’ recreational cannabis law are overdue – and must ensure Black and Brown business owners will be awarded lucrative dispensary licenses that so far have gone only to whites.
Pastors Ira Acree, Cy Fields and Marshall Hatch Sr. say Black and Brown communities are once again being harmed; this time, they’re losing out on lucrative state licenses to run cannabis dispensaries. “This is not good, this is not right,” said Acree, pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church.
A cannabis forum will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at 5437 W. Division. Sponsors of the event are the 15th Police District, 29th Ward Ald. Chris Taliaferro, MedMen, Westside Health Authority and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
