The Black Star Project calls for greater protection of citizens following the NATO Summit, as the city protected heads of state from other countries while more Chicagoans died.
The film, which shows the consequences of violence and focuses on solutions to the community’s problems, will be shown several other times on the West Side.
The three-part event, running from June to August at Columbus, Douglas and Garfield parks, will feature local acts, gospel choirs and artists Musiq Soulchild and Syleena Johnson.
The 9:45 a.m. event is part of the group’s annual memorial brick ceremony.
The 11 a.m. event at the New Tabernacle of Faith Baptist Church will be followed by a walk through West Side neighborhoods, with more events to follow.
The demand comes in response to a study of metro areas nationwide showing nearly 52 percent of black men and boys in Chicago are unemployed.
The welcome news comes two years after the city canceled the area’s only market.
The National Volunteer Week event was part of the company’s ongoing involvement with students who participate in the Stay in School Initiative.
The program, which aims to offer opportunities to individuals with disabilities, will be closing the series May 20 with “Images of Disability in Films for Kids.”
