Austin residents invited to Friday’s blues fest

In all, 35 young people from across Chicago were honored this month by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, which each year adds names to the city’s Rising Star Honor Roll. The teens – two from Austin – were recognized for their creativity and work either in music, theatre, dance, visual arts, media arts or literary arts.
The Chicago West Community Music Center’s orchestra free performance will held at 7 p.m. June 7 at the Columbus Park Refectory, 5701 W. Jackson Blvd. This is the group’s first Chicago concert after performing in China and France.
Located alongside Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School at 5618 W. Washington Blvd., the center offers space for the community to collaborate and be creative. The new center, which features a 900-seat auditorium, is open to the community and professional artists to rent, including the Circle Rockets youth orchestra.
A free concert will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. May 29th at Columbus Park Refectory, 5701 W. Jackson.
West Side resident Bonni McKeown says Chicago’s world-famous blues music can be a powerful cultural symbol to encourage appreciation of African-American culture. The city would greatly benefit from a blues revival, she says.
The West Side DJ often entertains Austin area residents at various venues throughout the neighborhood and beyond.
The Chicago City Council recently approved a $1 million grant for Catalyst Circle Rock Elementary School, 5608 W. Washington Blvd., to turn a vacant auditorium into the Glen & Lonni Kehrein Center for the Arts.
The fourth annual blues fest will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 at Columbus Park Refectory, 5701 W. Jackson Blvd. Featured performers include Sharon Monique, Larry Taylor, Ronnie G. and Marie Levon.
All are welcome to participate in the 100 Voices for Justice Mass Choir on June 12 at New Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, 4301 W. Washington Blvd. There is one required rehearsal at 7 p.m. June 11.
