As residents were briefed about a mural that is being redone at the Central Avenue viaduct there were calls for infrastructure repair. “Why are you putting a Band-Aid on a gushing wound? one resident asked.
West Side residents are invited to attend a virtual meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. April 7 about a mural that will be painted at 350 N. Central Ave. Alds. Chris Taliaferro (29th) and Emma Mitts (37th) will be in attendance.
The community-focused mural by local artist Tia Etu was unveiled last week at the store, 4650 W. North Ave. Etu said she featured the things she thought were wonderful about the community in the mural, which is right inside the store’s entrance.
A new 62-by-16-foot mural in Austin reminds the community of its roots, said David Rodriguez, program manager at Youth Outreach Services. The mural can be seen on the outside of YOS’ building at 5910 W. Division St. Stop by and check it out.
The mural, named Wake Up, was completed by 14 young people from Austin and Oak Park this summer at Central Avenue and Lake Street as part of a summer program organized by the Oak Park Area Arts Council.
Ald. Chris Taliaferro says $700,000 in funding will pay for six projects – ranging from community gardens and murals to pedestrian islands and park equipment. Six months of community meetings and two weeks of voting determined how the menu money will be spent.
