State Rep. La Shawn Ford, an Austin resident, is “open” to running for mayor, though he will not be participating in an event Thursday night organized by others to garner support.
The Austin Adams Block Club hosted the event last weekend. They planted rose bushes along Adams Street, ate barbecue from Smoky Zo’s and were visited by the mayor. Another community event is planned for this Saturday.
Austin College and Career Academy High School senior Darien McGee discussed the change he hopes will come to Austin now that Mayor Lori Lightfoot has assumed her position.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Truss’ appointment along with the rest of the seven-member board on Monday at a press conference. The new board will be sworn in on June 26.

Former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot answered questions about a number of issues before a crowd of a few hundred West Side residents on March 28. Her opponent, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, was a no show at the mayoral forum held less than a week before the April 2nd runoff.
The Chicago Westside branch of the NAACP and the Austin Quality of Life Plan’s Taskforce for Civic Engagement will host a candidates forum featuring Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle Thursday night.
Voters will also be voting for treasurer, but West Siders won’t be selecting an alderman in the runoff because the incumbents were reelected Feb. 26th in the 28th, 29th and 37th wards.
