Attend a virtual community meeting to learn more about the city’s plans for Chicago Avenue from Austin Boulevard to Cicero Boulevard. Register for the meeting, which will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24.
Austin has a new community space, at the corner of Chicago and Lockwood avenues. City officials say it’s just a taste of what’s to come in terms of investment on the West Side.
The Austin United Alliance will hold a wealth-building webinar – “A Blueprint for Accessing the Capital We’ve Been Waiting For” – at 10 a.m. June 16. The focus will be on how to narrow the racial wealth gap that impacts Austin and other West Side communities.
The Austin United Alliance, led by Heartland Alliance and Oak Park Regional Housing Center, has been selected as the developer for the Laramie State Bank building. It was one of seven proposals considered by city officials, who made the announcement Monday in Austin.
Virtual community meetings about the building’s future will be held from 6 to 8:15 p.m. Jan. 19th and 20th. There will be presentations about seven proposals to West Side residents to learn more, then participants will be asked to provide feedback.
Antonia “Toni” Ruppert, an Austin native, has been selected as the neighborhood’s artist in residence. The new city program, under INVEST South/West, will place artists in four communities throughout the city.
As city continues to invest in Austin as part of its INVEST South/West program, city developers and non-profit partners are focusing their attention on several blocks of Chicago Avenue, from Cicero Avenue to Austin Boulevard.
Artists who live and work within Austin or other INVEST South/West neighborhoods are encouraged to apply. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. July 26. The budget for each capstone project will be $150,000.
Chicago officials will hold the second of four city-wide meetings to promote the new Invest South/West program Jan. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kehrein Center, 5608 W. Washington Blvd. The focus will be on the Austin, Humboldt Park and North Lawndale neighborhoods.
