Several churches and organizations are distributing food to those in need on Chicago’s West Side and nearby suburbs. No one should go hungry, especially at this time of year.
Groceries will be distributed – while supplies last – from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept 26 at Helping Hand M.B. Church, 538 N. Lavergne Ave. PPE also will be available. Walk or drive up.
Three boxes of grains, produce and meat will be distributed per household from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 at the corner of Leamington and Kinzie. You can walk or drive up.
Third Unitarian Church, 301 N. Mayfield Ave., is launching an outdoor pop-up pantry on Saturdays from 10 a.m. till noon, starting this Saturday, July 11. The pantry will distribute non-perishables, such as canned goods and possibly fresh produce. There will also be household items available, including cleaning supplies, toilet paper, diapers, hand sanitizer and face masks.
Most days of the week, there are food pantries and other organizations offering help to West Side residents in need. Find the list here.
West Side residents can pick up free food on Thursdays starting May 14 at By The Hand Club For Kids, 415 S. Laramie. The pop-up pantry will be available on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through June 18. It’s one of several being held throughout the city.
Five of the district’s Network 3 schools – including Brunson Elementary – will distribute food the week of April 6. Starting April 13, when e-learning resumes, free meals will be handed out at nearly 300 schools across the district, including 14 in Austin.
West Side residents needing help feeding their families can visit weekly food banks operated by St. Martin de Porres Church, Hope Community Church and Fraternite Notre Dame. The Police Department’s 15th District has also been distributing food.
Contributions can be made in person or online until June 9th. The goal is to raise at least $3,000.
Austin food pantries will receive a portion of money raised at the annual walkathon held earlier this week.
