Austin youth to compete in Hoops in the Hood tournament

Thirty-one teams will participate from across the city Saturday at Seward Park.
The Rising Sun team beat Greater Saint John in the final game.
The single-elimination tournament will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 28th at Rising Sun Baptist Church. It’s sponsored by the Austin Dream Makers mentoring program, a collaboration of six West Side churches.
The free event will be held at Ella Flagg Young School, 1434 N. Parkside, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It targets teen boys and men from 14 to 30.
Mentoring and spirituality are part of the weekly activities. A tournament will be held this week in Austin.
Several West Side parks will host the park district-organized events.
The hope is the games, which start this week, will stem violence this summer.
Women 18-years-old and older can tryout Jan. 26 at Columbus Park from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The free 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 8 basketball skills clinic is being held at Marshall High School, 3250 W. Adams St. Youth ages 8 to 18 are welcome to participate. Registration starts at 12:15. Canned goods for a local food pantry will also be collected at the event.
The Nov. 17 basketball game, sponsored by NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas and CeaseFire, brought together rival gang members with the hope of ending conflict on the streets.
