Nine Austin sites featured in this weekend’s Chicago architecture tour

The nine sites that are open to the public are Assumption Greek Orthodox Church (901 S. Central Ave.); Austin Community Family Center (501 N. Central Ave.); Austin Town Hall Cultural Center (5610 W. Lake St.); Catholic Charities Father Augustus Tolton Peace Center (5645 W. Corcoran Place); Columbus Park Refectory (5701 W. Jackson Blvd.); Fraternite Notre Dame (502 N. Central Ave.); Kehrein Center for the Arts (5618 W. Washington Blvd.); St. Martin’s Episcopal Church (5700 W. Midway Park); and Third Unitarian Church (301 N. Mayfield Ave.).

See a movie in the garden tonight

The Austin Green Team’s summer movie series continues Tuesday, July 30 at 168 N. Laramie. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and non-alcoholic drinks. Snacks will be provided. And don’t miss the garden tour 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3 at Laramie and Maypole.

Gun violence hits close to home

A 22-year-old man was shot to death near state Rep. La Shawn Ford’s family home last weekend. Nearly 30 people have been killed in Austin so far this year. Ford urges city leaders to take more aggressive steps to protect West Side residents and “end this violence now.”
