Three Democrats and one Independent are challenging 12-term congressman Danny K. Davis for his seat in the U.S. House. All but one candidate filed third-quarter campaign finance reports last week documenting how much they have raised and how much campaign cash they have on hand for the March 17th primary.
The nine sites that are open to the public are Assumption Greek Orthodox Church (901 S. Central Ave.); Austin Community Family Center (501 N. Central Ave.); Austin Town Hall Cultural Center (5610 W. Lake St.); Catholic Charities Father Augustus Tolton Peace Center (5645 W. Corcoran Place); Columbus Park Refectory (5701 W. Jackson Blvd.); Fraternite Notre Dame (502 N. Central Ave.); Kehrein Center for the Arts (5618 W. Washington Blvd.); St. Martin’s Episcopal Church (5700 W. Midway Park); and Third Unitarian Church (301 N. Mayfield Ave.).
Ald. Chris Taliaferro will be hosting a discussion on participatory budgeting in the 29th Ward. Residents will have a chance sometime in November to vote on the projects they think should be funded out of the alderman’s “menu money.”
Front Porch Art Center and Austin Town Hall will host the sixth annual (In)Justice For All Film Festival 6 p.m. Wednesday. They will also offer a creative art-based workshop at 3:30 p.m. with a licensed counseling psychologist and registered expressive art therapist.
Ernest Cato III will serve as deputy chief of patrol (North) overseeing nine districts on the North and West sides. Replacing Cato in the 15th District will be Yolanda Talley, who served as a watch operations lieutenant in the 15th District for two years and has 25 years of experience with the Chicago Police Department.
Registration is still open for Saturday’s race – the fifth annual – and organizers hope to surpass 700 participants. Walkers and runners can register in person on Friday at 5840 W. Chicago Ave. until 5 p.m. and on race day beginning at 7 a.m. Loretto Hospital and Ald. Chris Taliaferro’s office are among the groups and businesses that will be fielding teams.
Markell “Kell-O-G” Mooney, spoken word poet and founder of Word Life Productions, started the patio shows at his family’s home in the 5100 block of West Concord Place in March 2003 after the death of his father, Willie E. Mooney Sr.
The Austin Green Team’s summer movie series continues Tuesday, July 30 at 168 N. Laramie. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and non-alcoholic drinks. Snacks will be provided. And don’t miss the garden tour 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3 at Laramie and Maypole.
A 22-year-old man was shot to death near state Rep. La Shawn Ford’s family home last weekend. Nearly 30 people have been killed in Austin so far this year. Ford urges city leaders to take more aggressive steps to protect West Side residents and “end this violence now.”
