The statue, created by Austin artist Keith Brownlee, is located at 4922 W. Chicago Ave. It was unveiled Thursday, the last day of Black History Month.
The organization – which has provided a temporary home to women recovering from substance abuse for more than 30 years – moved late last year from Austin to Oak Park.
The first-term alderman won another four years on the Chicago City Council, beating Dwayne Truss and Zerlina A. Smith. Incumbents Emma Mitts (37th) and Jason Ervin (28th) also easily won re-election.
Voters in the 29th Ward have three aldermanic candidates to choose from: Ald. Chris Taliaferro, Dwayne Truss and Zerlina A. Smith. There are 14 mayoral candidates, including two who have strong West Side ties: Austin Chamber of Commerce Amara Enyia and state Rep. La Shawn Ford.
The dance will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 27. There will be a photo booth, games and red carpet. Prizes for the best dressed will be awarded.
The Black Votes Matter discussion will be held at 5 p.m. Feb. 23 at Austin Town Hall, 5610 W. Lake St., and feature Dr. Phalese Binion of the Westside Ministers Coalition, DeJuan Jackson of Voter Block and mayoral candidate Amara Enyia, who leads the Austin Chamber of Commerce.
The open house will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 21 at 645 S. Central. Information will be shared about various services available to those with autism and related developmental differences.
The Austin nonprofit is one of 15 groups nationwide vying for five $20,000 grants to be awarded by The Atlantic magazine and Allstate. The public can vote until 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time March 1.
Eight of the 14 candidates running for mayor Feb. 26th participated in last week’s forum, which was organized by the Chicago Westside chapter of the NAACP.
The state lawmaker is one of 14 people on the Feb. 26th ballot to be Chicago’s next mayor. Voters can cast their ballots now during early voting.
