Monday is deadline for youth to apply for summer jobs

Over the next several days, Austin Coming Together and LISC Chicago will be holding the last set of community meetings in a year-long process to develop the improvement plan.
The first 100 youth between ages 16 and 21 to arrive today, March 26, between 10:30 and 11 a.m. will be guaranteed summer job registration. There will also be a youth town hall during the free event, which ends at 4 p.m. and will be held at By the Hand Club for Kids at 415 N. Laramie
BUILD will be holding its eighth annual public speaking contest from 6 to 8 p.m. March 15 at 5100 W. Harrison St. Don’t miss their motivational stories.
The seven working groups will meet from Feb. 26 through March 7 at Austin Coming Together’s offices at 5049 W. Harrison. The working groups are: public safety, youth, housing, civil engagement, education, economic development and community narrative.
Dozens of people working on a five-year, quality-of-life plan met last week to determine next steps. Austin Coming Together is leading efforts to produce the plan, which is expected to be unveiled this summer.
Austin native Khiry Johnson was recently named “alum of the month” by Mikva Challenge. Johnson is a stand-up comedian and motivational speaker who travels extensively. His speeches have inspired youths as well as adults across the nation.
About 150 mourners gathered at Greater St. John Bible Church earlier this week to bid farewell to 15-year-old Antwon Green, who was fatally shot Sept. 4 in North Lawndale.
The event – which will be held from 12 to 4 p.m. at Austin Town Hall, 5610 W. Lake St. – will feature art and peace making workshops, performances, free food and refreshments.
The event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 2 at Douglass High School, 543 N. Waller Ave.
