There are nearly 700 open seats on 267 local school councils across the city; five schools in Austin are still looking for members to serve. See the list AustinTalks has compiled of members currently serving on LSCs in Austin.
At a community meeting hosted last weekend by state Rep. La Shawn Ford, community members discussed concerns they have about e-learning and the opioid crisis, which is hitting the West Side even harder this year than in 2019.
There will also be free food at the Aug. 22 event, which starts at 2 p.m. The West Side location is at Madison and Central. The giveaway is in memory of Mary Lane and in association with the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois and Alexandria Lodge #148.
Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford will host her 11th annual back-to-school parade Sunday, Aug. 9 at Brookfield Zoo. There will be free snacks, school supplies, backpacks and more at the drive-thru event, which will take place at the south entrance lot near the high school from 12 to 2 p.m.
High school juniors and seniors at Austin College and Career Academy – as well as the district’s dozens of other high schools – will be learning exclusively at home. The school is still deciding whether to keep its two school resource officers. Two other Austin high schools – Michele Clark Academic Prep Magnet High School and Frederick Douglass Academy High School – have already voted unanimously to keep their officers.
Michelle Clark Academic Prep Magnet High School students found a way to share tips on coping with social isolation from their peers and teachers.
Cluster Tutoring will be holding sign-up sessions at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23 and Aug. 30. Tonight’s session will be held at Pine Avenue United Church, 5460 W. Augusta; next week’s session will take place at First United Church of Oak Park, 848 Lake St.
Chicago Public Schools is holding a town hall meeting with CPS CEO Janice Jackson on May 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Michele Clark High School, 5101 W. Harrison.
Parents, teachers and school staff will be able to vote Wednesday at elementary schools and Thursday at high schools. In Austin, there will still be vacancies on 12 of the 17 LCSs, which will be filled before July 1 when all members begin serving.
