Last weekend’s trip to the Sheridan Correctional Center highlights the importance of kids maintaining contact with their incarcerated parents.
More than 200 students called on the school’s leadership to listen to their concerns.
The Sept. 29 “Break the School-to-Prison Pipeline” event united residents citywide to speak out against practices that take students out of school.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Austin technology academy more than doubled its student performance over the last decade, thanks to Principal Shawn L. Jackson and engaged parents.
Elections for all CPS elementary schools will be held today from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the same time tomorrow at all high schools.
Current members worry there aren’t enough parents involved to assist with selecting a new principal, fundraising and recruiting new students – all issues the new council faces.
The current LSC coordinator says members elected next week will have the challenge of recruiting new students for the school that currently has just 390 enrolled and a capacity of 1,600.
Applicants will now have an extra two weeks to submit the required forms, and many positions are still available.
They say CPS left the community out of the process and the decision is not in students’ best interest.
