Voters will be choosing Chicago’s next mayor today and a new treasurer, too. Polls will be open until 7 p.m.
Former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot answered questions about a number of issues before a crowd of a few hundred West Side residents on March 28. Her opponent, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, was a no show at the mayoral forum held less than a week before the April 2nd runoff.
The Chicago Westside branch of the NAACP and the Austin Quality of Life Plan’s Taskforce for Civic Engagement will host a candidates forum featuring Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle Thursday night.
Voters will also be voting for treasurer, but West Siders won’t be selecting an alderman in the runoff because the incumbents were reelected Feb. 26th in the 28th, 29th and 37th wards.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle also did well in West Side wards; she faces former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot in the April 2nd runoff.
Eight of the 14 candidates running for mayor Feb. 26th participated in last week’s forum, which was organized by the Chicago Westside chapter of the NAACP.
The state lawmaker is one of 14 people on the Feb. 26th ballot to be Chicago’s next mayor. Voters can cast their ballots now during early voting.
The candidate forum will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at UIC Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Road. The focus will be on neighborhood issues.
Candidates wanting to replace Mayor Rahm Emanuel or serve as one of the 50 members of the Chicago City Council have until Nov. 26 to file their petitions.
