Field School students to start classes at renovated Key Elementary building

An open house will be held Aug. 22 from 5 to 6:30 at the school, which is located in the former Francis Scott Elementary School that CPS closed nearly a decade ago.
Legislation signed into law last week by Gov. J.B. Pritzker expands already required Black history coursework to include pre-enslavement of Black people, why Black people came to be enslaved and the American Civil Rights renaissance. The new law – a key part of the Illinois Black Caucus’ legislative agenda – also increases the percentage of grant funds prioritized for Black males and incorporates consideration of financial need in awarding grants, among other improvements to higher education.
Slots are available for approximately 8,000 young people to participate in the after-school program that begins the week of March 8. The programs will be offered remotely, as they have been since last summer. Teens will earn a stipend between $90 and $250 depending on the length and level of expertise required for the program.

Events will be held May 16-19 at Michele Clark High School, the West Side STEM Learning Center and La Follette Park.
