Dozens of West Side residents gathered to commemorate Nelson Mandela and call for economic empowerment in Austin.
A Safe Haven, state Rep. La Shawn Ford and Veteran One Stop Shop is holding a Facebook and Instagram live fundraiser April 15 from 7 to 10 p.m.
Traveling as part of the “Get Counted” bus tour, members of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus made a stop at MacArthur’s Restaurant to unveil a new partnership they hope will help hard-to-count areas such as Austin get an accurate count in next year’s census. The data collected every decade determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities.
All who are concerned about Austin’s future are invited to attend today’s meeting, which will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the West Austin Child Development Center, 4920 W. Madison.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle also did well in West Side wards; she faces former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot in the April 2nd runoff.
The first-term alderman won another four years on the Chicago City Council, beating Dwayne Truss and Zerlina A. Smith. Incumbents Emma Mitts (37th) and Jason Ervin (28th) also easily won re-election.
Eight of the 14 candidates running for mayor Feb. 26th participated in last week’s forum, which was organized by the Chicago Westside chapter of the NAACP.
Supporters gathered last week on the South Side to discuss a mayoral bid for the Austin lawmaker; another meeting will be held tonight.
