Turn in your gun this week

The Chicago Police Department will be accepting guns – no questions asked – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 24 at Corinthian Temple Church of God, 4520 W. Washington Blvd. Residents will receive $100 for each gun turned in, and $10 for BB guns, air guns and replica guns.

Join Thursday’s anti-gun prayer vigil

Fresh Start Fathers, the Greer Family and Austin residents will hold the 13th annual anti-gun violence prayer vigil from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the corner of Lotus Avenue and Congress Parkway. Since 17-year-old Marcus Greer was killed in 2008, an annual prayer vigil has been held in his memory to speak out against gun violence.

Turn in a gun event Saturday

No questions will be asked at the Aug. 8 event at Hope Community Church, 5900 W. Iowa. People who turn in a gan will receive $100, while those who bring a BB gun, air gun and replicas will be given $10 per weapon.

Let’s stop gun running from Indiana

Although Illinois has one of the country’s tougher gun laws, the neighboring Hoosier state doesn’t, which means illegal guns keep flowing into Chicago, says Austin lawmaker La Shawn Ford. He’s pushing legislation to stop the flow of illegal guns from nearby states.
