Join Thursday’s anti-gun prayer vigil

By |

Fresh Start Fathers, the Greer Family and Austin residents will hold the 13th annual anti-gun violence prayer vigil from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the corner of Lotus Avenue and Congress Parkway.

After losing Marcus Greer (Lil Marcus), their beloved brother, son, nephew, grandson and friend, in April 2008, the Greer family rallied his friends and neighbors to join in prayer, asking God to intervene and help stop the killing of our children. The turnout that first year was phenomenal.

James R. Shannon of Fresh Start Fathers was asked to lead everyone in prayer and did so gladly. That day, everyone decided to continue holding a prayer vigil every year on April 15 – which are the same numbers in the address (415) where Marcus’ life ended.

Since then, the number of shootings dropped drastically in South Austin. The power of prayer is the ultimate solution to address and combat the gun violence epidemic.

This year, we intend to take this event to the next level by inviting all of the surrounding churches and pastors, elected officials, the media and all concerned organizations working to eradicate gun violence.

It is our hope and prayers to continue maintaining a safe environment for our children – and for everyone.

Please wear face masks and practice safe distancing as COVID-19 is still ravishing the city.
