Last Austin disaster recovery center to close Tuesday

Oct. 30 is the deadline for residents and business owners to apply to FEMA for disaster assistance in the wake of the summer flooding.
With the Oct. 16 deadline to apply for assistance approaching, a resource fair will be held Saturday at which West Side residents can get help with their applications.
Austin residents whose homes or businesses were damaged in the devastating floods that occurred from June 29 to July 2 can apply for grants and loans through FEMA.
Good Neighbors will hold the meeting at 2 p.m. July 18 at 5437 W. Division St. State Rep. La Shawn Ford will be there to discuss how those affected by the July 2 flooding can get help.
Metropolitan Water Reclamation President Kari Steele, Illinois Senate President Don Harmon and 37th Ward Ald. Emma Mitts are expected to meet with members of the Leaders Network Tuesday at the faith group’s monthly meeting in Austin.
In the wake of last weekend’s torrential rain that flooded hundreds of basements on Chicago’s West Side, state Rep. La Shawn Ford is urging ComEd and People’s Gas to temporarily stop utility shutoffs of those affected by the storms and also offer assistance.
Local officials want input from Austin residents on how stormwater can be better managed to prevent flooding. West Siders are asked to complete a survey created by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago before the end of November.
