Austin College and Career Academy High School senior Darien McGee discussed the change he hopes will come to Austin now that Mayor Lori Lightfoot has assumed her position.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Truss’ appointment along with the rest of the seven-member board on Monday at a press conference. The new board will be sworn in on June 26.
Located alongside Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School at 5618 W. Washington Blvd., the center offers space for the community to collaborate and be creative. The new center, which features a 900-seat auditorium, is open to the community and professional artists to rent, including the Circle Rockets youth orchestra.
Three organizations doing work in Austin – A Long Walk Home, Chicago Freedom School, and Communities United-Voices of Youth in Chicago (VOYCE) – will participate in the June 1 event at Columbia College Chicago. The organizations, which are supported by the Bright Promises Foundation, will compete for a $10,000 grant.
Take part in a discussion at 6 p.m. May 23 about the resource officers in Chicago Public Schools. Representatives from the Office of the Inspector General will also be discussing the gang database. Dinner will be served at the free event, which will be held at Sankofa Culture Center at 5852 W. Chicago Ave.
The Westside Health Authority’s Good Neighbor Campaign honored the work being done by first responders and teachers. In all, five teachers and two first responders were celebrated at the May 14th event.
Events will be held May 16-19 at Michele Clark High School, the West Side STEM Learning Center and La Follette Park.
The choir will be joined by several in-school choirs as they present a free community concert at 7 p.m. May 15 at Michele Clark High School, 5101 W. Harrison St.
The Friendship Baptist Church, at 5200 W. Jackson Boulevard, hosts the monthly meal on the second Saturday of the month. Join West Side residents on May 11 from 1 to 4 p.m.
All are welcome at the church, located at 5200 W. Jackson Blvd., from 1 to 4 p.m. March 9. Friendship Baptist Church offers a free community meal the second Saturday of every month.
