Stop by block club convention this weekend

The 15th Police District and faith leaders will host several community events throughout the summer in an effort to reduce violence.
The former vacant lot at 1114 S. Mason Ave. has been transformed into a public space for community members to gather and children to play. The grand opening will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 19, with a short program and ribbon cutting taking place at 2 p.m.
There will be free food, music and resources from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the 5200 block of West Quincy Street.
Learn how to organize block clubs and neighborhood watches 1 p.m. Feb. 18th at the 15th District Police headquarters, 5701 W. Madison St.
Identified areas of high-crime will receive greater police attention and church groups, block club leaders, police and residents will picket the spots every Wednesday in June in an attempt to reduce violence.
The center, located near the corner of Austin Boulevard and Chicago Avenue, wants to work with West Side residents to help make Austin safer.
Just two CAPS officers are working in the 15th District of the Chicago Police Department, down from five before this fall’s cuts. That’s causing some Austin residents to question the city’s commitment to the nearly 20-year-old program that brings officers and citizens together to fight crime.
Cutbacks in the Chicago Police Department’s CAPS program will put more officers in the field, but some worry about community policing being scaled back.
