Attend this Black history stay-in-school jam Feb. 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the 15th Police District, 5701 W. Madison St. There will be giveaways, snacks, music, guest speakers and more.
EATS Groceries hopes to open a store on Madison Street, after years of exploring possible sites across the West Side. Meanwhile, Forty Acres Fresh Market continues to make progress on its building on Chicago Avenue.
The group pushed for more contracts and jobs for the Black community and for the league to increase its advertising in the Black press. “This is an opportunity for the NFL to say, ‘Yes, we would like to engage with Black businesses, to do our part, to make sure that we can help communities develop and grow, and try to put people to work and try to help with the violence that is happening in the streets,'” said state Rep. La Shawn Ford.
The Leaders Network of Chicago is calling on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to create an inclusive task force to address discrimination, days after former Miami Dolphins Coach Brian Flores sued the NFL and three of its 32 teams, alleging racist hiring practices.
There are several locations on the West Side providing COVID-19 shots and boosters at no cost.
The screenings are available through the end of March for individuals who are uninsured or underinsured. The screenings will look for a number of conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis and dry eye.
