New fitness-themed pubic park to be unveiled in Austin

City officials and community leaders will take part in Saturday’s ribbon-cutting at the site of the former Emmett Elementary School, in the 5500 block of West Madison Street.
The Austin Chamber of Commerce’s 18th annual community Christmas tree lighting and parade will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2. The holiday parade will start at 5 p.m. at the corner of Madison Street and Laramie Avenue and end at the 15th Police District, 5701 W. Madison Ave., where the tree lighting will be held at 6 p.m.
Also Friday night, there will be a “Christmas around the world” event held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the 600 Block of Lorel Community Gardens. The event, which will include free refreshments, is sponsored by the 600 Block of Lorel Book Club and Austin Coming Together.
The ban is enforced on 107 miles of main streets throughout the city from 3 to 7 p.m. through April 1. Violators will face more than $200 in fines and fees.
Incumbents Chris Taliaferro and Emma Mitts could face up to three contenders on the Feb. 28th ballot, depending on whether objections are filed and how election officials rule. Several candidates also filed to run for the newly created 15th and 25th Police District Councils.
West Side families must register by Nov. 28 to participate in the Dec. 10th event, which will be held at Columbus Park Refectory.
Candidates wanting to represent residents of the 29th and 37th wards in the Chicago City Council began filing their petitions Monday, and so did residents seeking a seat on the new Police District Council. Candidates have until Nov. 28 to file petitions with the Chicago Board of Elections.
Three youth games (ages 11 to 15) and one adult game (18 and over) will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at Leland Field, 512 S. Lavergne Ave.
Anyone interested in running can join CARA’S Austin Running Crew, which meets every Thursday at 5 p.m. for most of the year. The last run of the season was last week, but the group will begin again in February.
Food giveaways will take place Saturday and Sunday. The Garfield Park Friendsgiving celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov, 19 at 3834 W. Madison St., and a Thanksgiving dinner will be provided from 10 a.m. to noon at Black Wall Street, 3708 W. Roosevelt Road. Free turkeys will be distributed at 11 a.m. Nov. 20 at 5932 W. Lake St.
