Mirroring a trend across Chicago, Austin reported 10 fewer homicides in 2019. Forty-seven people were killed, down from 57 in 2018, according to the Chicago Sun-Times homicide tracker.
Residents will be able to drop off live holiday trees through Jan. 18th inside tree corrals set up at 25 designated Chicago Park District sites, including Garfield Park, 100 N. Central Park Ave., and Riis Park, 6201 W. Wrightwood Ave.
The Chicago Park District will offer free access to 69 fitness centers located in parks citywide, including Austin, and a free preview of over 25 fitness classes being offered during winter session. Free lap swim is also available at many citywide pools. Register online or sign in onsite.
The Austin African American Business Networking Association will holds its annual Kwanzaa celebration Dec. 27 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Jackson Blvd. Coleman’s BBQ will be honored as business of the year, and Darnell Shields of Austin Coming Together is the community service recipient; Marseil Jackson will receive the Delores McCain Community Award. Tickets are $50.
Tickets for the Dec. 21 concert are free. Doors open at the Kehrein Center, 5628 W. Washington Blvd. at 5 p.m. The performance is from 6 to 8 p.m. and features Rachel Washington.
Join BUILD staff and state Rep. La Shawn Ford to learn about work being done in Austin and plans for the future. Building tours will be given, at 5100 W. Harrison St., and refreshments will be served at the 5:30 p.m. event on Dec. 17.
This month’s fresh produce market will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 13; from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 14; and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m Dec. 15 at 5051 W. Chicago Ave. There will be a large selection of affordable fresh produce, recipe demonstrations, free sampling and giveaways.
The visit with Santa event will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dec. 14 at Columbus Park Refectory, 5701 W. Jackson Blvd. Christmas stockings stuffed with goodies and a picture with Santa will be available to children 12 and under accompanied by an adult.
All Austin residents are invited to the community summit, where updates will be given on Austin’s quality-of-life plan. Celebrate the victories and investments, and discover how you can get involved. The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 14 at Kehrein Center for the Arts, 5628 W. Washington Blvd.
