The three businesses – POTLUC, Soul City Chicago and Third City Cafe – are receiving about $3 million out of $14.4 million being funded through the Chicago Recovery Plan. More than 180 proposals were submitted during the latest round of funding. The next deadline to apply for a grant is Jan. 31.

Rev. Ira Acree urged Providence St. Mel students to take action in the tradition of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Honor him by becoming activists in your community, the Austin pastor said. Also Monday, state Rep. La Shawn Ford met with young detainees at the Cook County Jail.
Celebrate the life and legacy of the civil rights leader by participating in a virtual discussion Monday at 5:30 p.m. The discussion will be led by Congressman Danny K. Davis.
Front Porch Arts Center will host a virtual free public reading of local poetry, essays and stories from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
West Side residents can take refuge at two locations near them – Garfield Center, 10 S. Kedzie Ave., and Trina Davila Center, 4312 W. North Ave. They are two of six warming centers the city is operating from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Chicago will begin accepting applications for the 2022 shared cost sidewalk program at 6 a.m. Jan. 10. Chicagoans can apply by calling 311; visiting the city’s service request website; or through the free CHI311 mobile app.
There are a few West Side locations to drop off Christmas trees to be recycled for mulch. Trees can be dropped off at one of 26 Chicago parks starting Jan. 8. Mulch will be available at six locations starting Jan. 10.
The reception and panel discussion was to be held at the Austin library branch but had to be postponed because the library is closed due to the number of staff who’ve tested positive for COVID. The exhibit, which opened in December at the library, highlights the work of 19 Austin and Oak Park residents.
