Drive-in movies today in Austin

The first showing will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 19, while the second showing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. There is a 30-vehicle capacity for both shows, which is sponsored by BUILD Chicago and Michele Clark Magnet High School. Enter on Leamington. Food will be available for purchase; you’re welcome to bring your own snacks and beverages. No smoking or alcohol is allowed. Restrooms will be available.

Free COVID-19 testing Thursday

Stop by Bethel New Life, 1140 N. Lamon Ave., between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Aug. 13 to get a non-painful mouth swab. Results are expected in three to five days. You may register to reduce your wait time.

West Siders invited to back to school parade Sunday

Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford will host her 11th annual back-to-school parade Sunday, Aug. 9 at Brookfield Zoo. There will be free snacks, school supplies, backpacks and more at the drive-thru event, which will take place at the south entrance lot near the high school from 12 to 2 p.m.

Turn in a gun event Saturday

No questions will be asked at the Aug. 8 event at Hope Community Church, 5900 W. Iowa. People who turn in a gan will receive $100, while those who bring a BB gun, air gun and replicas will be given $10 per weapon.

Land sale to help build community center in Austin

A $25 million community center would be developed in Austin through a city-owned land sale recently introduced in the Chicago City Council. The proposed North Austin Community Center would be constructed on five acres of vacant, city-owned land at North Laramie Avenue and West Moffat Street.
