Residents in the 29th Ward will have three candidates to choose from when early voting begins this week. First-term Ald. Chris Taliaferro is being challenged by Dwayne Truss and Zerlina A. Smith. A fourth candidate was knocked off the Feb. 26th ballot.
The candidate forum will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at UIC Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Road. The focus will be on neighborhood issues.
The petitions of two of the three incumbent alderman – 28th Ward Ald. Jason Ervin and 37th Ward Ald. Emma Mitts – have not been challenged. But each of the challengers in both of those wards are having to defend the signatures they collected to secure a spot on the Feb. 26th ballot.

Five candidates filed for the 28th, 29th and 37th Ward seats on the first day they could. Candidates have a week – until Nov. 26th – to file their nominating petitions with the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.
Austin residents can still register to vote in next month’s election. Dozens of races are on the ballot, including governor, attorney general, the Illinois General Assembly, Congress and judges.
Everyone running in the March 20 primary for Cook County assessor has been invited to the forum, which will be held at 11 a.m. March 3 at Sankofa, 5820 W. Chicago Ave. The Chicago Westside NAACP chapter organized the event.
State Rep. La Shawn Ford and the Westside Health Authority are hosting a voter registration event especially for people who’ve served time in prison on Feb. 4 starting at 5 pm. at 4920 W. Madison St.
At a press conference Thursday, the first-term official said he had decided not to challenge Board President Toni Preckwinkle.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning 3rd through 12th grade participants. The deadline to enter is April 28th.
