Back to school event at Zoo

Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly LIghtford is holding her annual back-to-school event at Brookfield Zoo from 12 to 3 p.m. Aug. 7. Registration is from 11 a.m. to noon.

Congressman Danny Davis’ annual back-to-school event starts at 10 a.m. Aug. 21 with a parade, followed by a book bag giveaway at noon at Columbus Park. Free health screenings and COVID testing also will be available,

Boys and Girls Club opening in Austin

A new club will open next month at Austin College and Career Academy High School, serving 40 to 50 students after school. There are also clubs at Austin High School, Brunson Math and Science Speciality Elementary School and John Hay Community Academy.

Don’t miss the largest back-to-school community event on the West Side. It takes place from 12 to 5 p.m. Aug. 13 at Michele Clark Academic Prep Magnet High School, 5101 W. Harrison St.

Backpack, school supply giveaway on Saturday

There will also be free food at the Aug. 22 event, which starts at 2 p.m. The West Side location is at Madison and Central. The giveaway is in memory of Mary Lane and in association with the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois and Alexandria Lodge #148.

West Siders invited to back to school parade Sunday

Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford will host her 11th annual back-to-school parade Sunday, Aug. 9 at Brookfield Zoo. There will be free snacks, school supplies, backpacks and more at the drive-thru event, which will take place at the south entrance lot near the high school from 12 to 2 p.m.
