Austin group to hold open house Saturday

A House in Austin, which builds connections and supports families with small children on the West Side, will hold a ribbon-cutting at 1:15 p.m. Sept. 12 at 533 N. Pine Ave.
Three organizations doing work in Austin – A Long Walk Home, Chicago Freedom School, and Communities United-Voices of Youth in Chicago (VOYCE) – will participate in the June 1 event at Columbia College Chicago. The organizations, which are supported by the Bright Promises Foundation, will compete for a $10,000 grant.
The nonprofit is expanding its presence in Austin as the bank looks to downsize its operations at its aging Lake Street facility.
Darnell Shields is the new sole executive director of Austin Coming Together. He had shared the position with Andrew Born, who remains with the non-profit group.
Local resident Valerie Leonard helps organizations by challenging them to become compliant in 30 days.
The Austin non-profit, public alternative high school received $2,000 from Community Bank of Oak Park River Forest.
