Amid rising food and gas costs, local groups are helping West Side residents through pop-up pantries and home delivery programs, as well as longstanding food pantry locations.
Austin residents can get free produce, dried goods and meat from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 27 at the corner of Leamington and Kinzie. Food will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The event is being organized by Austin Coming Together and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
Third Unitarian Church, 301 N. Mayfield Ave., is launching an outdoor pop-up pantry on Saturdays from 10 a.m. till noon, starting this Saturday, July 11. The pantry will distribute non-perishables, such as canned goods and possibly fresh produce. There will also be household items available, including cleaning supplies, toilet paper, diapers, hand sanitizer and face masks.
Light of Liberty Church, at 2 Washington Blvd. in Oak Park, will serve free lunch through Aug. 18, while New Life Ministries, 634 N. Austin Blvd., will provide both breakfast and lunch from July 10 through Aug. 18.
Contributions can be made in person or online until June 9th. The goal is to raise at least $3,000.
The Greater Chicago Food Depository’s lunch bus begins Monday and runs through Sept. 2 at several locations throughout the city, including the Austin branch library, 5615 W. Race St.
Free breakfast and lunch are available on the West Side for those 18 and under this month and next.
The North Avenue Business Association holds its eighth annual food drive.
While the restaurant’s owner and cook passed away March 14, her daughter says “Miss Alice” would want her to continue to feed the West Side.
The free meals will be served over the lunch hour Thursday at four locations in Austin.
