Local groups take power into their own hands to stop violence

More than a dozen organizations working on Chicago’s West and South Sides met last week as part of the initiative “Operation Save Lives,” organized by state Rep. La Shawn Ford. “What we have today is a group of organizations and people that are saying that we can help our communities, and we are demanding that the state, the city, the county and the federal government support us,” Ford said.

See a movie in the garden

The Austin Green Team presents the last of this summer’s movies at dusk Aug. 21 at 168 N. Laramie. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and beverages. Snacks will be provided.

Bringing the young and old together

Saturday’s event will feature presentations and mini-workshops from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; activities will start at Root Riot Harambee Garden, 500 N. Waller Ave., and additional presentations will take place at GlennArt Farm, 5749 W. Midway Park, and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 5710 W. Midway Park.
