Columbus Park hosted two Juneteenth festivals last weekend, with hundreds of West Siders taking part. Mark your calendar for next year’s celebrations.
There will be at least three Juneteenth celebrations in Austin this weekend – two at Columbus Park and the other on Chicago Avenue. All are welcome!
West Side teens are invited to a holiday celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 17 at La Follette Park, 1333 N. Lararmie Ave. There will be free food and giveaways as well as a winter clothes drive. For each piece of clothing a teen brings, they will get one raffle ticket.
The tree lighting will be Dec. 4 at Assumption Church, 601 S. Central. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by the lighting at 6 p.m. All are welcome at this free event, which will include Christmas carols.
The annual event will take place from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3 in the 600 block of Laurel community gardens. Food and refreshments will be served. Social distancing and wearing of face masks will be required.
The Austin Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their annual holiday parade and tree lighting festival Friday Dec. 3. The parade starts at Unity Fellowship Church at Cicero and Madison, with the tree lighting at 6 p.m. in front of the 15th District police station, 5701 W. Madison st.
Celebrate the birthday of peacemaker Nelson Mandela from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 16 at 5300 W. Chicago Ave. Two community leaders – Chicago Police Sgt. Jermaine Harris and state Sen. Kim Lightford – will be honored. Friday’s celebration is sponsored by state Rep. La Shawn Ford, the Westside Health Authority and SSA 72.
