Expo planned for people affected by crime

The free event – to be held from 12 to 2 p.m. March 11 at Michele Clark High School, 5101 W. Harrison St. – will provide resources for families about family liaison officers, the arrest process and victims compensation.

Nelson Mandela Community Center coming to Austin this fall

The center will be housed in a building, located at Madison Street and Cicero Avenue, that lifelong West Side residents Shrone Conaway and brothers Marnell and Malcolm Brown purchased. The center will provide resources on violence prevention, HIV/AIDS testing, housing, job coaching and support for people experiencing substance use disorders.

Ald. Taliaferro appears to have avoided a runoff in 29th Ward

As of March 6, Taliaferro had received 4,853 votes in the Feb. 28th election – or 50.37% of the votes cast, while challenger CB Johnson had received 3,881 votes – or 40.28% of the vote. In the 15th Police District Council race, a handful of votes separate three candidates vying for the last seat on that new body.

Church announces award in honor of slain member

Tracey Showers, a longtime member of Greater St. John Bible Church, was killed Tuesday night in front of her Austin home. The Tracey Showers Faithful Servant Award will be given each year to a woman in the community whose light has shined exceptionally over the past year. A $10,000 award also has been announced to help find Showers’ killer.

New Austin community hub celebrated

BUILD Chicago’s new 10,000-square-foot campus will be officially open to the public in May, with youth programs starting this month. The hub is located at BUILD’s Austin site at 5100 W. Harrison St.

Incumbent in the 37th Ward easily wins re-election, while 29th Ward race may need to be determined in April runoff

Ald. Emma Mitts is headed to another four-year term on the Chicago City Council, while Ald. Chris Taliaferro may still face a runoff, depending on the mail-in ballots still coming in and being processed. Voters also elected three members to both the 15th and 25th Police District Councils. And Austin resident Brandon Johnson appeared headed to a runoff in the mayoral election against former CPS CEO Paul Vallas.

Election Day has arrived

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28. Voters will be selecting members of the Chicago City Council and the new Police District Councils as well as mayor.
