The #100blocks100churches campaign continues this summer throughout the West Side. Every Wednesday night at 6 p.m., the faith-based community takes a stand to end violence in Chicago’s neighborhoods by joining together and wearing red.
A 22-year-old man was shot to death near state Rep. La Shawn Ford’s family home last weekend. Nearly 30 people have been killed in Austin so far this year. Ford urges city leaders to take more aggressive steps to protect West Side residents and “end this violence now.”
The Westside Health Authority along with its sponsors will be hosting its annual community playstreets event today from 3 to 6 p.m. at 5000 W. Van Buren. There will be music, food and a moon bounce.
The public is invited to celebrate the Nobel Peace Prize winner and first president of post-apartheid South Africa Thursday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at 5051 W. Chicago Ave. Mandela died in 2013.
The group meets every Monday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at 5852 W. North Ave. It’s part of the Good Neighbor Campaign.
The latest market will operate at 5051 W. Chicago Ave. on July 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; July 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and July 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a large selection of affordable fresh produce, recipe demonstrations, free samples and giveaways.
The South Austin Neighborhood Association has organized a number of workshops on healthy eating and nutrition. The next free class – on farm to plate – will be held 10 a.m. to noon July 13 at 5421 W. Monroe. Call or email to register your child.
The young people who created the winning organ donation posters while participating in By The Hand Club For Kids will present them Tuesday to Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White in downtown Chicago.
